Laparoscopy has seen a rapid increase in demand in the veterinary space in the last few years. With more and more practices taking it on, many are seeing clients actively seek this service for their pets, particularly for surgeries such as bitch spays.
It may seem an alien concept, why change what has worked for so many years? It is a big investment, and I can already spay through a small wound so what’s the point?
The point is, your clients are seeking it for a reason. The benefits to our patients are proven time and time again with reduced pain scores, reduced post-op complications and faster recovery times shown in all recent studies. The pain in an open spay is caused by tension on the suspensory ligament, which we do not cause during a keyhole spay, so it really doesn’t matter about the size of your spay wound.
As well as client and patient benefits, laparoscopy provides an excellent source of revenue for the practice – turning loss leader bitch spays into profitable procedures. As well as opening up a wealth of opportunity for other surgical and diagnostic procedures. It’s also a great way to aid team retention – introducing a new skill for your vets and nurses to learn and your client care team to be proud of.
